ProTube 2 Adds Download Functionality & More To Google?s YouTube App

ProTube is one of the most prominent jailbreak apps on iOS. It fixed the crumby native app and replaced it with something much more awesome. Now the same developer is at it again! ProTube 2 has just hit Cydia and adds lots new features to Google?s standalone YouTube app store app, most importantly a download feature which we all tend to love. I took it for a spin in the video below:

The reason why I like this tweak, is that it?s taken the new YouTube app for iOS, and improved it. It doesn?t try to do anything frilly, it includes a solid download manager with some sorely needed features that were blatantly missing from the new app. If you like what you see, ProTube 2 is available for $1.99 from the BigBoss repo. I personally am a big fan of this tweak, ever since the original ProTube hit Cydia?s shelves I?ve had it installed on my devices. Good job Jonas Gessner!

Pakistanis protest against anti-Islam film

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) ? Thousands of members of Pakistan's radical Islamic groups rallied on Saturday in the southern city of Karachi against an anti-Islam film that has sparked violence across the Muslim world.

"Innocence of Muslims" has enraged many Muslims for deprecating the Prophet Muhammad. At least 51 people, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya, have been killed in violence linked to the film, which also has renewed debate over freedom of expression in the U.S. and in Europe.

Chanting "Down with America" and demanding expulsion of the U.S. ambassador, the participants gathered in the heart of the city's business district, where prominent radical leader Muneebur Rehman demanded stern punishment for the filmmaker. But he asked the protesters to remain peaceful.

Protests are dying down in many countries but continue in Pakistan, home to several powerful radical movements. Since 23 people died in Karachi last week during demonstrations against the film, however, marchers appear to have heeded calls by clerics and other public figures to avoid violence.

Rehman also urged the Pakistan government to seek U.N. help in making new international laws to "protect the honor" of Islam's religious personalities.

Senior police officer Asif Ijaz Sheikh estimated that the crowd numbered more than 15,000. He said the protesters dispersed peacefully.

A similar rally was also expected in Islamabad and some other parts of the country later Saturday.

Shell shuts major oil pipeline in Nigeria

ABUJA (Reuters) - Shell's Nigerian unit shut its Bonny oil pipeline and deferred 150,000 barrels per day of production on Sunday after oil thieves caused a fire, the company said.

"Shell ... has shut the 28-inch Bomu-Bonny Trunkline after discovering a fire on it early this morning," a statement from the company said.

"A burning vessel, thought to be involved in the theft of crude oil from the line, was sighted near the incident site. The line conveys crude oil to Bonny Terminal."

Shell said it was mobilizing to fight the fire and would investigate the cause and carry out repairs as soon as possible.

Bonny Light is Nigeria's benchmark crude, used to price other grades of oil, and makes up around 10 percent of the total oil exported out of Africa's biggest producer.

Nigeria was due to export around 205,000 bpd of Bonny Light in November and 229,000 bpd in October, according to provisional loading programs. The grade is gasoline-rich and is popular with U.S. refiners.

Oil theft is a major problem in the Niger Delta wetlands region in southern Nigeria, where the majority of its oil is produced. The thousands of kilometers of winding waterways and creeks are difficult to police, although there is also evidence that security officials have been complicit in theft.

Shell estimates more than 150,000 bpd of oil is being stolen by gangs who tap into pipelines and siphon off industrial quantities of oil. Some of it is refined locally, while the rest is ferried out to larger ships offshore. (Reporting by Joe Brock; Editing by Dale Hudson and Maureen Bavdek)

Some "Curious" US And French Military Deployments

Regular readers are aware that periodically, usually weekly, Zero Hedge presents critical naval updates demonstrating the positioning of key US maritime assets, primarily strategic aircraft carriers. The location of these indicates far more what US foreign policy is focused on at any moment, than propaganda distributed for general consumption via the coopted media. Today, however, instead of focusing on aircraft carriers, using Stratfor analysis, we present several broad "curious" US and French military developments.

What the ultimate purpose of these movements is for now unclear - they may be perfectly normal deployments or they may be a precursor to something more. Remember: we know that both CVN-74 (which is currently just briefly caught up in that whole Senkaku Snafu between Japan and China) Stennis and Marine force LHA-1 Peleliu are en route to Iran, where following last week's modestly paliative Netanyahu comments, the military strategists believe the tide has turned and there will be no war with Iran in the immediate future. Ironically, following a spike in war chatter in the early summer, we said that precisely because of that there will be no conflict imminently as the Israeli military will never telegraph what it plans on doing in advance.

And, as always when dealing with military data originating from "sources", reader beware. Ultimately, even if untrue, the information will provide hints about whose agenda it is to foment military tensions.

Analysis, via Stratfor

According to a worldwide network of aircraft spotters and trackers, at least a dozen MC-130H, HC-130N, HC-130P and AC-130U military transport planes and gunships crossed the Atlantic Ocean on Sept. 13 heading eastbound. These aircraft are typically used for a variety of special tasks, including in close cooperation with special operations forces. The last reported stop for the aircraft was Souda Bay, Crete. It is unclear whether the aircraft have left Crete, but we are working on tracking them down.

A week and a half later, on Sept. 24, the same network of aircraft spotters noted 12 U.S. Marine Corps F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets arriving in two waves at Moron air base in Spain. It is not known where the squadron is heading, though it could be en route to Afghanistan to reinforce elements there. The Harrier squadron that suffered heavy losses in the Sept. 14 attack on Camp Bastion has already been replaced by another Harrier unit, so it is unlikely that the squadron's deployment is directly linked to that event. It is also possible that the F/A-18s are heading to the Gulf Cooperation Council region. A number of air superiority squadrons, including an F-22 Raptor squadron, have already deployed to the region. If that is the case, the squadron is intended simply as reinforcements or replacements for assets currently deployed there.

Also on Sept. 24, The New York Times published an article stating that Iraq and the United States were negotiating an agreement that could result in the return of small units of U.S. soldiers to Iraq on training missions. At the request of the Iraqi government, according to U.S. Gen. Robert Caslen, a unit of Army special operations soldiers was recently deployed to Iraq to advise on counterterrorism and to help with intelligence. It is possible that at least some of the MC-130 aircraft previously mentioned were delivering these special operations troops to Iraq.

Another report on Sept. 24, this one by the Le Figaro French-language newspaper, said some 100 French special operations troops had been deployed in the sub-Saharan region to counteract militants in northern Mali. Le Figaro also reported that maritime patrol aircraft that can be used to collect intelligence will be deployed to the region and that commandos of the French navy will reinforce the French special operations troops.

Finally, Italian journalist Guido Olimpio reported in September that U.S. unmanned aerial vehicles are currently tracking militants in Cyrenaica, the historical name for eastern Libya. He also said "reliable sources" had confirmed that U.S. special operations forces were planning to carry out intelligence operations that could be in preparation for surgical strikes in North Africa, including in Libya and in Mali.

All these deployments could be previously scheduled movements for training or part of ongoing operations. They also do not necessarily mean any one mission is imminent. The United States and France could simply be positioning military assets in a region that is rife with conflict and that may eventually require rapid military intervention or action.

Did the butler do it? A Q&A on the Vatican trial

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The Vatican has never seen anything like it.

Pope Benedict XVI's trusted butler, who dressed the pontiff each morning, attended his daily Mass and helped serve him his meals, stands accused of stealing the pope's private correspondence and giving it to a journalist who wrote a blockbuster book about the secrets of one of the most secretive institutions in the world.

Paolo Gabriele, a 46-year-old father of three, goes on trial Saturday in the most sensational crime committed on Vatican territory since the 1998 double murder of the Swiss Guard commander and his wife. That case never came to trial because the suspect killed himself.

Gabriele, who was replaced after the scandal broke in May, is scheduled to face the three-judge Vatican tribunal, charged with aggravated theft and facing up to four years in prison if convicted. He has already confessed and asked to be pardoned by the pope ? something most Vatican watchers say is a given if he is convicted.

WHAT PAPERS WERE STOLEN?

According to prosecutors, Gabriele had an "enormous" stash of papal documents at his Vatican City apartment. After his May 24 arrest, he admitted he photocopied documents and gave them to Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi, whose "His Holiness: The secret papers of Pope Benedict XVI" was published in May. The most damaging letter reproduced in the book was written by the former No. 2 Vatican administrator to the pope, in which he begged not to be transferred as punishment for exposing alleged corruption. The prelate, Monsignor Carlo Maria Vigano, is now the Vatican's U.S. ambassador.

WHY WAS IT LEAKED?

Nuzzi has said his source, code-named "Maria" in the book, wanted to shed light on the secrets of the church that were damaging it. Taken as a whole, the documents seemed aimed at discrediting Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican secretary of state and Benedict's longtime trusted deputy. Bertone, 77, a canon lawyer and soccer enthusiast, has frequently been criticized for perceived shortcomings in running the Vatican.

DID THE BUTLER DO IT?

Prosecutors quoted Gabriele as saying he knew taking the documents was wrong, but that he felt the Holy Spirit was inspiring him to shed light on the problems he saw around him. "Seeing evil and corruption everywhere in the church ... I was sure that a shock, even a media one, would have been healthy to bring the Church back on the right track," Gabriele was quoted by prosecutors as saying during a June 5 interrogation. They quoted him as saying he never intended to hurt the church or Benedict.

IF HE CONFESSED, WHY BOTHER WITH A TRIAL?

In the U.S. legal system, a case such as this might result in a plea bargain. But the Vatican legal system doesn't provide for plea bargains, according to Giovanni Giacobbe, the prosecutor in the Vatican appeals court. He noted that confessions can be coerced or given up to protect someone else. Gabriele's confession must be corroborated by other evidence uncovered during the investigation in order for him to be convicted, he said. A co-defendant, Vatican computer expert Claudio Sciarpelletti, is charged with aiding and abetting Gabriele.

HOW DOES A VATICAN TRIAL WORK?

The hearing opens Saturday at 9:30 a.m. No oaths are taken ? as the Vatican legal system, like the Italian one on which it is based, assumes a suspect may lie for self-protection. The hearing is declared open and one of the judges reads the charges aloud against Gabriele. He doesn't enter a plea. The defense can make objections to the indictment. Both sides may enter their witness lists. Eventually, the presiding judge ? Giuseppe Dalla Torre, president of the Vatican City State tribunal ? questions Gabriele. Unlike the U.S. system, prosecutors don't question suspects directly and there is no cross-examination; the judge conducts the interrogations on behalf of both sides. Eventually, after all witnesses are heard, objections dealt with and evidence examined, the judges convene in their chambers and issue a ruling.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?

There has never been a trial like this before in the Vatican tribunal, so there's no way to know how long it will take. Much depends on what, if any, objections are raised and how many witnesses are called. Hearings are usually only held on Saturdays, since the judges on the Vatican tribunal hold full-time jobs elsewhere.

WHAT'S THE TRIBUNAL LIKE?

The trial takes place in the small, austere courtroom inside a four-story, peach-colored palazzo inside Vatican City. A plaque near the entrance reads "Judicial Offices" and a carved stone papal seal frames the doorway. A metal detector greets visitors. The courtroom features rich wood paneling and gilded molding on the ceiling, and a small crucifix is centered behind the chairs of the three lay judges. Gabriele, assuming he attends, can sit at one of the tables facing the judges with his lawyer. The prosecutor has his own place at the other table. There is a small section for the public.

WHO CAN ATTEND A VATICAN TRIAL?

On paper, Vatican court proceedings are open to the public. But Giacobbe said those wishing to attend must petition the court, which then decides whether to grant permission. Gabriele, who was granted house arrest in July after spending nearly two months in a Vatican police unit, doesn't have to attend. For the media, eight journalists attend each session and report back to the Vatican press corps. No television, still cameras or audio recording is allowed and court transcripts aren't public.

HOW HAS THE POPE AND THE VATICAN REACTED?

The Vatican took the betrayal very seriously: Benedict appointed a commission of three cardinals to investigate alongside Vatican magistrates; they delivered their confidential report to the pope over the summer. Benedict addressed the scandal for the first time a week after Gabriele was arrested, saying "The events of recent days about the Curia and my collaborators have brought sadness in my heart." But in a nod to his confidence in Bertone, he added: "I want to renew my trust in and encouragement of my closest collaborators and all those who every day, with loyalty and a spirit of sacrifice and in silence, help me fulfill my ministry."

Some memorable props used by speakers at the UN

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's use of a cartoon-like drawing of a bomb to convey a message over Iran's disputed nuclear program follows in a long and storied tradition of leaders and diplomats using props to make their points at the United Nations. Here are a few memorable examples:

US shows embassy bug to expose Soviets

In May 1960, U.S. Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge accused the Soviets of espionage, producing before the Security Council a wooden Great Seal of the United States which had been presented by a group of Russian citizens at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. Lodge then extracted a tiny microphone out of the eagle's beak with a pair of tweezers, and said dozens of listening devices had been found in U.S. embassies in communist bloc countries. "From what plays were these props taken and when will it open?" the Soviet delegate responded. Earlier that month, the Soviet Union had shot down an American U-2 spy plane over Russia.

Nikita Khrushchev bangs his shoe

In October 1960, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev banged his shoe as he interrupted a Philippine delegate making accusations of Soviet imperialism in Eastern Europe. Khrushchev's granddaughter later recalled the Soviet leader had new tight shoes on, which he had taken off when he took his seat. He had started by banging his fists to protest what the Filipino was saying, until his watch fell off. As he went to pick it up, Khrushchev caught sight of his shoes and decided to bang one of them instead. Amid shouting and jeering from Eastern bloc delegates, the assembly president adjourned the meeting, banging his gavel so hard it broke.

Cuban missile crisis photos

During the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962, U.S. Ambassador Adlai Stevenson made something of a TV-age breakthrough when he presented to the Security Council photo evidence of a Soviet missile buildup. Stevenson demanded Soviet representative Valerian Zorin answer whether missiles were being installed, memorably adding he was prepared to wait "until hell freezes over" for the response. Zorin, unprepared for so direct a question, could only reply: "I am not in an American courtroom, sir. ... You will have your answer in due course." Stevenson then unveiled blowups of black-and-white aerial photos of Soviet missile installations in Cuba, large enough to make an impression on the TV audience.

Yasser Arafat brings his gun to the U.N.

When Yasser Arafat spoke at the United Nations General Assembly in 1974, Israel was incensed. But for the Palestinian Liberation Organization leader it represented recognition for their struggle for a Palestinian state. To emphasize his revolutionary credentials, Arafat appeared wearing his gun belt and holster, reluctantly removing his pistol before mounting the rostrum. He told the world body, "Today, I have come bearing an olive branch and a freedom-fighter's gun. Do not let the olive branch fall from my hand."

On Iraq war path, Powell shows vial of 'anthrax'

In a speech he would regret, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell on Feb. 5, 2003, unleashed an 80-minute avalanche of allegations that built the case for war against Iraq. Before a hushed Security Council chamber, Powell played intercepted conversations, showed reconnaissance photos of Iraqi sites, and brought out a replica vial of "anthrax." He accused Iraq of hiding chemical and biological weapons and reviving their nuclear bomb project. He said it posed a grave threat to the world. After the invasion of Iraq, it emerged that reports of Saddam Hussein's WMD program were false.

Bolivia's Morales chews a coca leaf

Bolivian President Evo Morales produced a coca leaf during a March 2009 meeting of the U.N. Committee on Narcotic Drugs in Vienna and proceeded to chew it. "This is a coca leaf. This is not cocaine," said Morales, a former coca farmer, as he argued for its legalization. He told delegates he'd chewed coca intensely for 10 years when he was a farmer and it hadn't diminished his health or abilities. "If I was incapable, I would not be president," he said.

(AP) ? Joe Biden may just be the perfect pitchman for the senior vote.

Seeing Medicare as a window to gain new support, President Barack Obama's campaign dispatched the vice president to two sprawling Florida retirement communities Friday, hoping a white-haired 69-year-old running mate will be able to stir enthusiasm among seniors in Democrat-rich South Florida and tip the scales for the state's 29 electoral votes.

"It makes sense," says Charles Zeldon, a Nova Southeastern University expert on politics and voting. "He is one of them."

Well, at least closer than Obama, a generation younger.

That may give Biden an edge in helping the president chip into Republican Mitt Romney's lead among senior citizens, a key voting bloc not only in Florida but other battleground states such as Iowa and Ohio. The Democratic campaign doesn't expect to win the majority of seniors, but hopes that lowering Romney's totals could make the difference in close states.

Biden has spent much of the campaign trying to shore up support among white, working class voters, another group where he has a more natural connection than Obama. He's aiming to use his same affable, plain-spoken style to persuade older voters to back Obama.

He stopped by a local deli later Friday, where he greeted a man who informed him he had once shaken the hand of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

"I'm shaking a heckuva hand," Biden announced. The man identified himself to reporters as Seymour Maiman, 85, of Ft. Lauderdale.

Biden hit all the expected notes before a crowd of about 850 at Century Village in Boca Raton, a popular campaign stop for Democrats. He spoke of Obama as a defender of popular entitlement programs like Medicare, and portrayed the plans of Mitt Romney and running mate Rep. Paul Ryan as harmful to seniors and their families.

"What they don't tell you, what they really don't want to talk about, is how they'd fundamentally change Medicare," Biden said. "They'd turn it into a voucher program."

When it comes to Medicare, the Republicans say the Democrats have it backward.

Ryan, speaking to an AARP conference last week, declared, "The first step to a stronger Medicare is to repeal Obamacare because it represents the worst of both worlds. It weakens Medicare for today's seniors and puts it at risk for the next generation."

"Who are you going to believe?" Biden asked on Friday after unleashing a barrage of criticism of Republican plans.

Ryan's Medicare proposals have been a frequent target for Democrats, but Biden went further, saying a vote for the GOP would also lead to hundreds of dollars in tax increases on seniors' Social Security benefits.

"They cannot possibly continue and add to the tax cuts for the super wealthy unless they eviscerate the rest of the budget," he said.

Again, the Romney camp said, Biden had it exactly wrong.

"Vice President Biden is using Social Security to fabricate the Obama campaign's latest false attacks," said spokesman Ryan Williams.

Inside the Century Village clubhouse, a Democratic-friendly but sometimes cantankerous crowd didn't muffle any complaints. "We can't hear you!" some shouted when the volume was too low. "Sit down!" when their view was obstructed. And, at least once, "This music is awful!"

But Biden was met with loud applause and beaming faces.

"I'm a Joe fan! I'm a Joe fan!" said Judy Cloutier, 66, who came to hear Biden speak. "He's such a down-to-earth man. He's like salt of the earth."

Dot Tillett, 67, said Biden was the right running mate for Obama, and a good choice to send to talk to seniors. "He's a perfect complement," she said. "He communicates well with people of all types. He's just that kind of guy."

Dorothy Schayes, 87, was less enthusiastic about the vice president, calling him "a joke." But deeply behind Obama, she hoped others were paying attention to the Medicare debate, which she said spurred concern for her 16-year-old granddaughter.

"I think there's trouble for her," she said. "So he needs another term."

At the deli later, the vice president also made a detailed sales pitch to a customer who had questions about Obama's health care overhaul.

"You will be able to get better health care than you get now in terms of cost for a lot less money," Biden told Steve Grossman, 39.

Younger people also are being enlisted by the Democrats in going after the elderly. The Obama campaign announced a new e-card effort asking young supporters to send messages to their parents and grandparents telling them their Social Security and other benefits are at risk under Republican plans.

Seniors, like people in most demographics, are largely decided on who they'll vote for in the election. So making sure supporters turn out at the polls is important for both campaigns. Nationally, the 65+ population votes at a higher rate than any other age group.

Florida has a higher proportion of people 65 and older than any other state, and its total population of nearly 3.3 million seniors is second only to California. An estimated 68 percent of seniors in Florida voted in the 2008 presidential election.

A national Associated Press-GfK poll earlier this month found 52 percent of seniors supported Romney compared to 41 percent for Obama. But Democrats have sought gains among seniors by criticizing Romney's plan for Medicare, and a Pew poll released last week showed older voters who rate Medicare as a very important issue supported Obama by a substantial margin.

Zeldon said the resurgence of the Medicare issue has given an opportunity to Obama with older voters.

"He sees them as a vulnerable population for the Republicans," Zeldon said. "When they raised the issue of Medicare, they gave the Democrats a gift, because it allows them to give their ideas about Medicare and it's an easier sell."

'Lampard goal' referee welcomes new technology

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:17 p.m. ET Sept. 27, 2012

ZURICH (AP) - FIFA referees instructor Jorge Larrionda says goal-line technology can help at the 2014 World Cup, after issues at the 2010 tournament prompted its introduction.

Larrionda was the referee when England lost to Germany after his match officials failed to see that Frank Lampard's first-half shot crossed the line in South Africa.

Now employed by FIFA to train elite referees, Larrionda says "what we felt at the time was very tough" but adds it had a positive effect.

The mistake persuaded FIFA President Sepp Blatter to push for the approval of goal-line technology before the 2014 tournament in Brazil.

Larrionda says "it's for the global benefit of the sport."

The Uruguayan is helping prepare 52 World Cup referee candidates at a weeklong seminar that opens an 18-month training program.

Germany to make proposals to France on EADS-BAE merger

BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany will present France with a list of proposals concerning the planned merger of European aerospace group EADS and British defense contractor BAE Systems Plc , a German government source said on Friday.

The proposals, agreed by Chancellor Angela Merkel's office and the economy ministry, are aimed at preserving a balance of power between the two countries in a merged company, the source said.

France directly owns 15 percent of EADS, the maker of Airbus jets, and wants to retain its right to influence group strategy, currently conducted through a complex pact with 7.5-percent shareholder Lagardere .

In turn Germany is not a direct shareholder but sees the transaction as a chance to tighten its grip on a stake currently held by Daimler AG and a group of banks.

The German source gave no further details but his comments confirmed a report in Die Welt on Friday which also said Germany was ready to buy up the shares of Daimler and the banks via the state development bank KfW if France kept its own stake intact.

The merger to create the world's largest defense and aerospace company would dilute the influence of the French, German and Spanish governments in the company, prompting negotiations over their future roles.

The Financial Times Deutschland daily reported on Friday that Germany and France may try to secure a 27 percent combined shareholding in the new company, but said Britain was opposed.

The stake would create a shareholder counterweight with the power to block decisions by the management of the new company, the FTD said, citing sources familiar with the matter.

STATE INVOLVEMENT

The move could also prove a deal breaker since EADS boss Tom Enders has repeatedly said he wants to reduce state influence in a combined company and Britain and the United States remain wary of further state involvement.

The FTD said the idea enjoys French support, but France has so far proved unwilling to be pressured into trading concessions for the sake of a common position with Germany, given the mismatch of share holdings.

It was an open question whether Germany would approve such a proposal, the paper said, quoting industry sources.

The two countries should also each get a seat on the board of directors of the merged company, the FTD said.

German reservations over the merger include how to safeguard jobs and protect the new company from any future hostile takeover, according to a government document obtained by Reuters on Monday.

Last Saturday France and Germany agreed at a summit to "consult" on the merger talks, but French President Francois Hollande avoided pledging to create a common position between the two countries, despite earlier German hopes of a joint initiative.

On paper, the idea of a core 27 percent shareholding suggests France would buy Lagardere's 7.5 percent stake and the German government would take over all of Daimler's voting interest of 22.5 percent. This would leave each side with a diluted stake of 13.5 percent under the proposed merger terms.

But two European defense experts who asked not to be named said this would hit opposition from Britain and the United States and nobody has yet come forward to claim ownership of the scheme.

Instead EADS and BAE have said they will offer the governments of France, Germany and Britain a "special share" in the new company, allowing them to block any future hostile takeover, but are determined to prevent meddling in other management decisions.

US seeks calm over Asian disputes; won't mediate

(AP) ? The Obama administration on Friday pressed U.S. allies Japan and South Korea to continue their cooperation on North Korea and other key issues, despite a dispute over a contested islet, and also urged Tokyo and Beijing to make serious diplomatic efforts on an even sharper dispute over maritime borders.

Meeting with the Japanese and South Korean foreign ministers, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said "every nation in the region has a responsibility to work to resolve disputes, peacefully lower tensions, promote regional security and stability." She noted the three key countries' cooperation is vital to convincing North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons, doing her best to calm their disagreement over the tiny islands known as Dokdo in South Korea, and Takeshima in Japan.

The two countries, which both host tens of thousands of American troops, also have been at odds over the historical legacy of Japan's 35-year occupation of South Korea in the early 20th century and its use of Korean women as sex slaves by soldiers. In June, the two countries put on hold an intelligence sharing pact after it provoked an outcry in South Korea.

"Our alliances with Japan and South Korea are the cornerstones of peace and prosperity in the region," Clinton said at the start of the talks with Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba and Korean Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan. "Each of these countries represents an enormous success story about what can happen when nations are focused on peace and stability and giving more opportunities to their own people, and developing good relationships with their neighbors. We will maintain close cooperation between the three of us. That is a top priority for the United States."

The dispute between Japan and South Korea is just one of several in Asia, where competing maritime issues are inflaming public sentiment and even provoking violent protests in China. Beijing's battles range from the resource-rich South China Sea to rock outcroppings administered by Japan.

China and Japan traded angry accusations over the islands in a late-night exchange at the U.N. General Assembly Thursday. The islands are called Senkaku by Japan and Diaoyu by China.

That prompted the top U.S. diplomat for East Asia, Kurt Campbell, on Friday to remind the two countries, which have the world's second and third largest economies, to recognize the importance of their relationship and resolve their grievances through dialogue. He said each government should set aside the territorial dispute from its other bilateral issues, acknowledging that it would be "extraordinarily difficult" to solve.

The U.S., however, will not play a mediating role in the dispute, Campbell told a news conference.

In her meeting, Clinton told the Japanese and the Koreans the same thing about mediation, a senior U.S. official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because she wasn't authorized to speak publicly about the private meeting.

More can mean less leptin Alzheimer | Health & Fitness Articles at ...

J. Wesson Ashford, MD, Ph.D. A major goal will be to determine whether treatment with leptin reduced the levels of a protein called tau, which is elevated in the cerebrospinal fluid of Alzheimer patients. Replacement therapy in leptin continued .High levels of the hormone leptin regulation of energy was associated with low rates of disease in a study published in TheJournal of the American Medical Association.

Leptin has been shown to reduce the levels of B-amyloid, the main constituent of the deposits, or plaques, that occur in the brain of people suffering from Alzheimer?s disease.

If our results are confirmed by others, leptin levels in older adults may serve as one of many possible biomarker for healthy aging and the brain, especially, may open new avenues in order to possible preventive and therapeutic interventions, write the researchers. Leptin replacement therapy

But Seshadri said it remains to be seen whether leptin replacement therapy would benefit humans with Alzheimer?s or help protect against disease.

He said the study reinforces the growing awareness that the health problems associated with procedures such as obesity and resistance increase the risk of dementia in old age.

Tau protein is a key that allows the transport along the fibers of the brain, he tells WebMD. If leptin decreases the levels of tau protein in cerebrospinal fluid, which tells us something is happening. So we only need 45 patients to demonstrate an effect.

Over 12 years of follow-up, those with lower levels of leptin were about four times more likely to develop Alzheimer?s than those with the highest levels.

Ashford is with the Center Stanford / VA Aging Clinical Research, Stanford, California

The treatment with leptin has been shown in studies on animals recent to improve the performance of the memory, even after the onset of Alzheimer?s disease, such as dementia.

Discovered in the mid-1990, leptin is produced by fat cells and is considered critical for the regulation and. But there is evidence suggesting a role more and more of the hormone in brain development and memory.

Higher concentrations at the beginning of leptin were associated with lower rates of dementia years later. This association was observed even after adjusting for the impact of quarantine abdominal or belly fat, which was recently identified as a risk factor for Alzheimer?s disease early.

The study initially included 785 elderly participants in the Framingham Heart Study in progress, which began enrolling patients in 1948.

The National Institutes of Health recently awarded nearly $ 3 million for a small pilot study of leptin replacement therapy in patients with Alzheimer?s disease.

?Our skeleton with its bones, joints and muscle connections serves us so well in our daily lives that we hardly pay attention to this great system,? said Dr. Elazar Zelzer Department of Molecular Genetics at the Weizmann Institute. ?While previous research has uncovered the mechanisms that contribute to the development and growth of each component of this complex organ and wonderfully adaptable, specific interactions between bones, muscles and tendons that drive the entire musculoskeletal system are not fully understood.

Our study raises a strong possibility that leptin may actually play a role in various pathological processes that cause Alzheimer?s disease clinic, the researcher Sudha Seshadri, MD, of Boston University School of Medicine, tells WebMD. The measurement of levels of leptin

If confirmed, the researchers say the findings could have important implications in the search for effective therapies to prevent and treat disease.

Slim Twig - Altered Ego - New Music Reviews

slim-twig

Even in the era of Wikipedia, trying to track down all of Toronto-based art-pop artist Slim Twig?s projects is no easy task. Some of his work includes producing music for Dirty Beaches, acting in a film with Ellen Page, working with Owen Pallett, and collaborating with US Girls (his wife, Meghan Remy). He?s a modern-day Renaissance man, specializing in all forms of the experimental and avant-garde.

In keeping with his other projects, Slim Twig?s new video for ?Altered Ego? is as wild and weird as you?d imagine. The clip is an eye-melting visual experience where the costumes of Renata Morales play as much a role as Slim Twig?s music. While the designer has done work with Arcade Fire, Zola Jesus, Grimes, and others, the flowing, impossible-to-describe outfits in ?Altered Ego? may be some of her most arresting. The song, too, has its own warped logic, where spastic guitar-squalls coalesce into something resembling pop. If only our last trip to MoMA had been so entertaining.

Nazi Buddha statue came from space!

It sounds like a mash-up of Indiana Jones' plots, but German researchers say a heavy Buddha statue brought to Europe by the Nazis was carved from a meteorite that likely fell 10,000 years ago along the Siberia-Mongolia border.

This space Buddha, also known as "iron man" to the researchers, is of unknown age, though the best estimates date the statue to sometime between the eighth and 10th centuries. The carving depicts a man, probably a Buddhist god, perched with his legs tucked in, holding something in his left hand. On his chest is a Buddhist swastika, a symbol of luck that was later co-opted by the Nazi party of Germany.

"One can speculate whether the swastika symbol on the statue was a potential motivation to displace the 'iron man' meteorite artifact to Germany," the researchers wrote online Sept. 14 in the journal Meteoritics & Planetary Science.

Iron man adventure
The iron man first came to Germany after a 1938-1939 Tibet expedition by zoologist and ethnology Ernst Sch?fer, who was sent to the region by the Nazi party to find the roots of Aryan origin. The statue then passed into the hands of a private owner. [ Fallen Stars: A Gallery of Famous Meteorites ]

Stuttgart University researcher Elmar Bucher and his colleagues first analyzed the statue in 2007, when the owner allowed them to take five miniscule samples of it. In 2009, the team had the opportunity to take larger samples from the inside of the statue, which is less prone to contamination by weathering or human handling than the outside where the initial samples were taken.

    2. Vampire squid sucks up garbage, not blood
    3. A clock to keep time after universe dies
    4. Is the uncertainty principle misunderstood?

They found that the statue is carved from a rare class of space rocks known as ataxite meteorites. These mostly iron meteorites have a high level of nickel. The largest-ever known meteorite, the Hoba meteorite of Namibia, is an ataxite meteorite that may weigh more than 60 tons.

It came from outer space
A chemical analysis of the iron man samples revealed they are a close match for a famous scattering of space rocks from the Siberia and Mongolian border. The Chinga meteorite field holds at least 250 meteorite fragments, most relatively small, though two topping 22 pounds (10 kg) have been found there. Scientists estimate the Chinga meteorite fell 10,000 to 20,000 years ago. The field's first discovery was recorded in 1913, but the statue's existence suggests people were mining the field for artistic materials long before that, Buchner said.

The identity of the carved man is unclear, but the researchers suspect he may be the Buddhist god Vaisravana, also known as Jambhala. Vaisravana is the god of wealth or war, and he is often portrayed holding a lemon (a symbol of wealth) or moneybag in his hand. The iron man holds an unidentified object in his hand. The statue is about 9.5 inches (24 cm) tall and weighs about 23 pounds (10.6 kg).

Many cultures used meteorite iron to make daggers and even jewelry, Buchner and his colleagues wrote, and meteorite worship is common among many ancient cultures. But the Buddha carving is unique.

"The Iron Man statue is the only known illustration of a human figure to be carved into a meteorite, which means we have nothing to compare it to when assessing value," Buchner said in a statement.

"Its origins alone may value it at $20,000; however, if our estimation of its age is correct and it is nearly a thousand years old, it could be invaluable."

Poke Einstein's brain with a genius iPad app

Wish you could peer inside the mind of a genius? Now you can. The screenshot above is from a new iPad app developed by the National Museum of Health and Medicine Chicago that lets users examine digitised versions of nearly 350 slides made from slices of Albert Einstein's brain after his death in 1955.

Generally, access to the fragile slides is limited, but a study of them published in 1999 showed that Einstein's parietal lobe, the area of the brain associated with mathematics and spatial reasoning, was 15 per cent wider than in a normal brain.

Now the museum behind the app hopes that researchers will be able to study the digitised version of Einstein's brain in more detail without risk of damaging the original slides, as well giving the general public a chance to put their finger on just what made the physicist tick.

Virginia Schools Set Example for Concussion Education and ...

Virginia Schools Set Example for Concussion Education and Monitoring

When Ellie Wallace got hit in the head playing lacrosse, she did not tell anyone.

Wallace displayed typical symptoms of concussion after that first blow, according to her mother, who thought her daughter just had a bad case of spring allergies. Wallace was extremely groggy and experienced headaches and mood changes.

Two days passed before she approached her trainer, during which she received a second accidental blow to the head off the field. The trainer was particularly worried about her upon hearing that she had been hit not once, but twice. After a cognition test, she was referred to a traumatic brain injury (TBI) clinic.

Virginia Law Targets High School Head Injuries

A Virginia State Law that went into effect on July 1, 2011 seeks to change the way school coaches and athletes treat head injuries. The law requires both coaches and students to go through training on how to identify a concussion. The law has limitations, though, as it only regulates school-sponsored activities and does not require any statewide reporting.

Virginia County Goes Above and Beyond

The limitations of the law, however, have not kept Chesterfield schools from launching their own surveillance system. They reported not only the number of concussions that occurred during the 2011-2012 school year, but also broke them down into season:

  • Fall: 124 concussions (109 of which were football related)
  • Winter: 22 concussions
  • Spring: 34 concussions

Numbers like these can help to evaluate the effectiveness of policies and also identify areas that need improved monitoring and additional education.

Chesterfield has taken the emphasis on concussion prevention and treatment very seriously and has placed certified athletic trainers in every one of the high schools in the county.

The initiative shown by these measures truly gives hope to the idea that the culture of sports can change, this upcoming generation of athletes and coaches will take concussion seriously and that they will recognize it as a traumatic brain injury.

Taking the Time to Heal

Wallace had to give her brain time to rest. For four days she could not read, write, watch TV, text, play electronic games or exercise. She could not go to school. This cognitive rest was followed by weeks of physical therapy to gradually incorporate exercise, TV, computer work, texting and sports back into her life. She initially could only handle half-days at school, but after a few weeks she was able to return full time and was eventually cleared to play school sports.

Wallace was fortunate that her head injury healed. Each TBI is unique and people?s reactions to them can vary greatly. Still, her life had to revolve around the healing process for months, taking her energies away from schoolwork and her life as a normal teenager.

The Virginia law and the efforts by school systems such as Chesterfield aim at catching concussions early so that they can be treated. The earlier they are caught, the better the prognosis for recovery.

Home price bounce will help boost?economy

Kevork Djansezian / Getty Images

A "For Sale" sign is posted at a home on August 28, 2012 in Los Angeles, Calif. The rise in home prices for the sixth month in a row, according to a widely-watched survey, is bringing much-needed help to the sluggish recovery.

By John W. Schoen, NBC News

The ongoing rise in home prices, up for the sixth month in a row in July according to a widely followed index, is bringing some badly-needed support for an ailing U.S. economy.

The road back to economic health, though, is going to be a long one.?

U.S. single-family home prices rose?in July, though the improvement was not as strong as expected, a closely watched survey showed on Tuesday.

The S&P/Case Shiller composite index of 20 metropolitan areas gained 0.4 percent in July on a seasonally adjusted basis, shy of economists' forecasts for 0.9 percent, according to a Reuters poll.

On a non-adjusted basis, prices fared better, rising 1.6 percent.

Compared to a year ago, prices in the 20 cities were up 1.2 percent, beating expectations for 1 percent. It was the second month in a row year-over-year prices have risen.

Tuesday?s home price data confirmed "recent good news" about the sector, David Blitzer, chairman of the index committee at Standard & Poor's, said in a statement.

"All in all, we are more optimistic about housing. Upbeat trends continue," said Blitzer.

Home price rebound

Most economists think home prices have stopped falling and are slowly headed back up. But the recovery to pre-bust levels will take years.

Some six years after the housing market collapsed, the forces of supply and demand that sent prices plummeting now appear to have laid a firm foundation for a sustainable recovery, according to many economists.

?The rise in home prices across the nation reinforces the view that housing is now leading rather than restraining the economy,? said Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economic Advisors

The U.S. housing market?s long slumber has been a major drag on the wider economy?s recovery from the 2007 recession. Now, as that market force shifts from a headwind to a tailwind, economists expect the housing revival to help boost economic growth in several ways.

?Strengthening in home prices is a plus for growth through various channels, including increased consumer spending because of wealth and confidence effects, increased incentive to buy before prices go up some more, and increased incentive to lend because of less chance of mortgages turning delinquent,? according to Jim O'Sullivan, chief U.S. Economist at High Frequency Economics.

Rising home prices have helped put consumers in a better mood. Consumer confidence jumped to its highest level in seven months in September as Americans were also more optimistic about the job market and income prospects, a private sector report showed on Tuesday.

Homebuilders are also feeling more upbeat. ?

Both home resales and groundbreaking on new houses rose in August, helping to lift business sentiment among homebuilders to a more than six-year high.

Housing starts rose 2.3 percent last month, the fastest in more than two years, and are up by more than 20 percent in the past year. But the gain follows a collapse that saw new home sales crash from a nearly 1.4 million annual rate in mid-2005 to fewer than 300,000 last year.

Foreclosure backlog
The recovery in home prices comes as the supply of ?distressed? properties has begun to ease. Those include houses seized by banks in foreclosure and so-called ?short sales,? in which a bank approves a sale for less than the outstanding mortgage balance. But with default rates still high by historical standards and a large backlog of pending foreclosures, those properties will continue to weigh on the market.

Capital Economics housing economist Paul Diggle figures the supply of homes for sale has fallen some 23 percent over the past year, while the pace of sales has picked up by 11 percent. That?s brought the number of homes on the market back down closer to historical levels.

?Supply may not fall much further, but with demand continuing to improve, the market will remain tight enough to sustain price gains,? he said.

Nationwide, Diggle expects price to close out 2012 with a gain of about five percent, after giving up some ground later this year as they typically have during the slower selling months in winter.

Demand for houses could also get a lift from the Federal Reserve?s recent move to force mortgage rates, already at historic lows, even lower. The Fed is hoping that cheaper credit will prompt?potential home buyers to take the plunge.

The central bank's announcement earlier this month that it would spend $40 billion a month to buy mortgage-backed bonds has already forced the yields on those securities sharply lower.

But for many borrowers, low mortgage rates aren?t the problem. Bankers have been demanding higher credit scores before approving loans, and with unemployment stuck above 8 percent, many would-be home buyers can?t get a mortgage.

Lower rates could also help spur the economy by helping existing homeowners with mortgages refinance to a lower monthly payment. But millions of them ? roughly one in four ? can?t get a new mortgage because they owe more on their old loan than their house is worth.
