Jerry, my Friday starts on Tuesdays, are you explaining to me, I do not get to share the sauce on my weekend?

On a level playing field, I think the desktop, or Notebook will still be a viable product for work & play in the future, but our input devices will change, as Speech recognition technology becomes a reality, and Gimp/photoshop, Inkscape/illustrator is done with hand movement rather than a tablet/mouse device.

But there are many users that only want to watch films and enjoy business or social contact, the mobile tablet/phone is perfect tool for that type of computing style. Size and eye sight might be one variables determining your computer of choice...

Since the Linux Netbook introduction (before Microsoft destroyed that market with overpriced hardware requirements): I always questioned why it did not become the phone, using an electronic tethered ear piece. The 7 inch Linux netbook was the perfect tool as a mobile computing device, that easily could have contained your most needed mobile applications, along with a daily planner, address book & cell phone. A Bluetooth ear piece with distant alarm to prevent your netbook from growing legs and walking away. The ear piece would also have been an efficient directional locating device for the forgetful person (maybe channel two as a car keys locator).

Ah, desktop, why would it be worse for Linux that it was before? All the factors that were working for Linux before are still valid today.
1. is still costs nothing compared to Windows and Mac OS X
2. Windows is still a security nightmare and it still sucks in many and diverse ways.
3. people still want freedom and don't want to depend on companies like Microsoft or Apple
4. if you want to run a Unixy OS you don't need special hardware like in case of Mac OS X (I think legally you can't run OS X on non-Apple hardware, and practically not all the hardware works fine with OS X.

What has changed? Windows sucks less therefore we need to be afraid for Linux? Last time I checked I still had to pay at least $99 for Windows and it would still require activation from Microsoft. But even if it Windows was free I would still use Linux.

By the way, people will use more devices, I have a number in my house already including an iPad and an Android phone and a Kindle (which uses Linux by the way), however I don't like to browse forums and type on iPad, just like radio didn't disappear when TV became popular desktop computers are not going to disappear because people have cellphones on which they can check their e-mails...

Michel,

I may be wrong, but thought there were more than several netbook users in this forum.

Post # 308209 adrian, the question i was asking was generally about the desktop as a platform - completely OS agnostic. it seems that as tablets gain market share the fewer desktop mfgrs there will be, and the fewer choices that people will have.

it's anyone's guess what sort of shake up this will cause. it will result in companies getting out of the desktop biz, or going out of biz, that's for certain. but will people like myself, who like to have a desktop system, still have the option?

Post # 308213 Desktops may migrate to mostly All-in-ones. But there will always be a decent market for a full Desktop. Segmenting the market into areas of need and 'style', and cost I suppose.

It might be that a big Desktop becomes a needed feature of a new house. A lot of houses are getting wired for digital OOTB. I don't see it dying at all.
