DETROIT (AP) — A power outage interrupted Game 3 of the American League championship series for 17 minutes.

The lights high atop Comerica Park went out and the videoboards were dark between the top and bottom of the second inning, delaying the Boston Red Sox-Detroit Tigers game.

The Tigers were coming up to bat for a second time with two hits after Justin Verlander held Boston without a hit for the second straight inning when the game was stopped.

Ten minutes into the stoppage, fans had not been informed how long the game would be delayed. Five minutes later, the Red Sox took their positions in the field and right-hander Jake Peavy began warming up on the mound.

Yahoo to encrypt webmail sessions by default starting January

Yahoo will start encrypting the webmail sessions of its users in early 2014 by making HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) standard for all Yahoo Mail connections.

Security experts, privacy advocates, and users have asked Yahoo for this feature for a long time. Other major webmail providers already offer it.

In November 2012, the Electronic Frontier Foundation with other privacy, security and human rights organizations, sent a letter to Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer asking the company to add HTTPS support to its communication services, including email and instant messaging.

HTTPS, which combines the HTTP Web communications protocol with the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption protocol, is widely used to secure connections between Web users and websites, and prevents sensitive data from being intercepted and read by unauthorized parties while in transit.

Yahoo started rolling out a new Web interface for Yahoo Mail late last year that provided support for full-session HTTPS, but only as an option. In order to enable the feature, users can go in their email account settings and check the "Use SSL" box in the "Security" section.

"Starting January 8, 2014, we will make encrypted https connections standard for all Yahoo Mail users," Jeffrey Bonforte, Yahoo's senior vice president of communication products, said Monday in a blog post. "Our teams are working hard to make the necessary changes to default https connections on Yahoo Mail, and we look forward to providing this extra layer of security for all our users."

The move comes at a time when there is increased discussion about privacy and security online following revelations that the U.S. National Security Agency and the intelligence agencies of other countries are running extensive electronic surveillance programs.

Some of the NSA programs revealed by documents leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden involve the upstream interception of Internet traffic as it passes through global networks, as well as data collection from online services providers including Yahoo, Microsoft, Google, Apple, Facebook, AOL and others.

The Washington Post reported Tuesday that the NSA collected online address books in bulk from Yahoo, Hotmail, Facebook, Gmail, and other email and chat programs at Internet access points controlled by foreign telecommunications companies and allied intelligence services.

This type of upstream data collection is something that HTTPS can potentially prevent, as long as the implementation is strong enough. The service provider might be later compelled to hand over the decrypted data at its end, but at least in that case the interception would be done with its knowledge.

In addition to preventing bulk data collection by government agencies, HTTPS can also prevent hacker attacks, like the theft of authentication cookies over insecure wireless networks or through cross-site scripting attacks.

Katy Perry to Perform at MTV EMAs

Katy Perry is heading to Amsterdam.

The pop princess will perform her next single, "Unconditionally," live at the 2013 MTV EMA Awards in the Dutch capital, airing in the U.S. on Nov. 10 at 6:30 p.m. ET/PT.

Perry is no stranger to the EMA stage, with three EMA awards to her name, and she hosted the ceremony in 2008 and 2009. She previously performed three years in a row, from 2008 to 2010, and served as a presenter in 2011.

"I'm so excited to return to the EMA stage!" Perry said in a statement. "I have tailor-made a performance of a brand new song from PRISM to share with fans from around the world."

Serving as a special correspondent during the broadcast, Will Ferrell will appear in character as Anchorman 2's Ron Burgundy, and will provide live updates throughout the show. Ferrell, as Burgundy, previously hosted the 2013 EMA nomination special last month.

Much like August's MTV Video Music Awards, Justin Timberlake and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis lead the EMA nominations list with five apiece, while Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke are each up for four awards. Among the other nominees are Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Daft Punk, Icona Pop, One Direction, Rihanna, Imagine Dragons, Eminem, Jay Z, Paramore, Avicii, Iggy Azalea and more.

Outside the U.S., the EMAs will air live on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 9 p.m. ET.

This Dynamic Robot Duo Is Making Solar Power Cheap As Hell

Solar power is fantastic, sure. But while the tech behind solar panels is zooming forward, there are other problems holding it back. Problems like installation and cleaning. Fortunately robots are here to help.

A pair of robo-workers named Rover and Spot, both from Alion Energy, are working their metal asses off to make installing solar panels as painless as possible. Rover, a hulking train-car like monster with a giant arm, slowly chugs down its specialized concrete track, laying solar panels behind it. And with a little human help, it can drop panels seven times faster than if you just had the crew of humans.

Then its buddy Spot, essentially a roomba for solar panels, can slide up and down that same finished track, cleaning off the dust and grime that slowly but surely makes panels less and less efficient. Spot can offer a six percent efficiency boost for huge fields of solar arrays, and while that doesn't sound like much, it adds up to huge savings.

Between the two of these suckers, Alion Energy thinks it can get the price of installing and maintaining fields of solar panels way down, so far down that they're competitive with fossil fuels. All in all the duo of 'bots should be able to reduce installation costs by 50 to 75 percent, and make the solar outfits churn out 13 percent more power to boot. Starter Pokémon and Legendaries

I have absolutely zero issues with characters who choose to leave the Legendary Pokémon be. If you would rather avoid Legendaries, then I'm all for it! The Legendary Pokémon were there as an option, but only a one time option because I was hoping that this RP would attract those who are good enough with the Pokémon universe to not need them at all.

The main reason I stated that if you want a Legendary you could only have one is because I was a part of a few Pokémon RP's during my time here and everyone was trying to say "can I reserve these Legendary Pokémon" or "Can we start with a Legendary?"

It annoys the crap out of me that they were so attached to Legendary Pokémon that they even had the brass to ask if they could START with one! I know the Legendary Pokémon are cool and all and that they are part of the main games, but really there is no reason to always HAVE to have an entire team of them or start with one. Know what I mean?

I just wanted to make sure that those who always wanted to catch a team of Legendaries stayed away from the RP.

A KINGSWINFORD pub will hold a fun day to support a charity that makes wigs for children with cancer.

The main attraction at the event at The Lenches Bridge, High Street, will be Victoria Hill, aged 26, from Brierley Hill, who is having 19 inches cut off her hair to donate to the Little Princess Trust.

Mrs Hill, a teacher at Withymoor Primary School, Brierley Hill, decided she would like to donate her hair two years ago and chose the trust as it supports children who have lost their hair because of the disease, by making them wigs using real hair.

Her mother, Sharon Bridgwater, said: “She is quite happy about it being cut although quite apprehensive as she hasn't had short hair for around 20 years. It will be cut at the nape of her neck as obviously being a teacher she would like to still look presentable.”

Mrs Hill will face the scissors at 7pm on November 2 but the pub’s family fundraising event will start at noon.

Guests will be able to tuck into food fresh off the BBQ, get their face painted and enjoy a disco and fireworks.

Pub manager, Paula Bromley, said: “ I am delighted to be able to support this fantastic cause and be able to host the family event here. We really need everyone’s support to make this event a huge success.”

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro's death by hanging in his prison cell may not have been suicide after all but an ill-fated attempt to choke himself for a sexual thrill, authorities said in a report issued Thursday.

The report also said two guards falsified logs documenting the number of times they checked on Castro before he died.

Castro, 53, was found hanging from a bedsheet Sept. 3 just weeks into a life sentence after pleading guilty in August to kidnapping three women off the streets, imprisoning them in his home for a decade and repeatedly raping and beating them.

The report, from Ohio's prison system, raised the possibility that Castro died as a result of autoerotic asphyxiation, in which people achieve sexual satisfaction while choking themselves into unconsciousness.

Castro's pants and underwear were around his ankles when he was found, the report said.

He didn't leave a suicide note, a full psychological evaluation had found no sign he was seriously mentally ill or contemplating suicide and investigators could find no reason he would've taken his own life, according to the report.

In fact, the day Castro died, the warden had recommended he serve his time apart from the other inmates, an option Castro expressed interest in, the investigation found.

The findings were forwarded to the Ohio Highway Patrol "for consideration of the possibility of autoerotic asphyxiation," the report said.

The Highway Patrol said it would have no comment pending the release of its own investigation.

Franklin County coroner Jan Gorniak, who classified Castro's death as a suicide last week, said Thursday that her office was never told his pants were down. But she said she stands by her finding of suicide.

In Castro's cell, officials found a Bible open to John Chapters 2 and 3 and pictures of Castro's family arranged "in a poster-board fashion," according to the report.

Surveillance video indicates guards didn't do at least eight required checks on Castro the afternoon and evening before his death and falsified the logs, the report said. Two checks were done just before Castro died.

The report also said staff failed to make sure Castro watched a suicide prevention video when he arrived in August.

Similar allegations of falsified logs have been made against two other guards in the Aug. 4 suicide of a death row inmate just days before he was to be executed.

After Thursday's report came out, the prison system announced that supervisors will conduct random checks at all prisons to make sure guards are doing their rounds.

Castro's lawyer brushed off the suggestion of autoerotic asphyxiation and said the prison bears responsibility for his death.

"Castro committed heinous and intolerable crimes that required lifetime punishment, but correctional facilities are still responsible for protecting the health and safety of all of the inmates," defense attorney Craig Weintraub said in an email.

The prison guards union accused the state of scapegoating employees instead of dealing with overcrowding and violence behind bars.

In court, Castro blamed his problems on an addiction to pornography. He described himself as a sex addict and said: "I'm not a monster. I'm sick."

Castro's background made him a candidate for attempting autoerotic asphyxiation, said a forensic psychologist, Bob Stinson. But Castro also was a suicide risk as he began a life sentence for a high-profile crime in an environment hostile to sex offenders, Stinson said.
